Senior year of high school was hard, to say the least. Fast-forward a little bit into the future and here I am… a freshman at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. I started school on August 20th and have been exposed to much more than I could have ever imagined in such a short period of time.

Coming from New York City I had this wild idea that I had seen and experienced nearly everything there was to be a part of. Boy, was I wrong. New York is like its own world. My biggest fear about going to college was leaving the world that I so tenderly loved and had become accustomed to. The days leading up to school went by very quickly, I did a boatload of laundry and argued with my parents over stupid things like the length of my bathrobe or the practicality of a steamer versus a handheld clothes iron. By the way, there is a difference between shower shoes and regular flip flops.

Get the shower shoes. I grew up being very independent, but I soon learned that there is a difference between self-proclaimed independence that comes with a parental safety net, and adulthood. Coming into Lehigh, I was aware of many things. Lehigh is an all-American school, with football it's part of one of the oldest college football rivalries in the nation — Lehigh-Lafayette anyone?

It's also primarily known for its engineering school and is located about 2 hours away from Manhattan on the top of a mountain. My dorm is at the top of the hill… How the hell was I supposed to get up there everyday? Back home, I eat dinner around 8 p. Out of everything, though, the two biggest differences I noticed were the party atmosphere and the workload. The first few days of school were orientation days. There was a pep rally and a convocation ceremony, which were surreal to me. My high school was a new school in downtown Manhattan.

This always made me feel like I was missing something, like my high school experience was insignificant because I had no camaraderie. Tradition is what I craved. To see our predecessors walk through the gymnasium and officially pass the flag to us as the class of made everything feel real. When classes finally began, I immediately felt the difference between college and high school.

Rather than having six classes a day, the most I would have was three — and I got to choose all of them — with my earliest class starting at in the morning. Everything I did was up to me now and my schedule was truly reflective of that.
